I am on the AIIA NSW Committee. That enables me personally and also Thoughtworks as an organisation to get much greater access to the industry, to be able to influence it, to be able to network and understand what other players in the ICT industry are doing and to give back to the ICT community generally.
The events program also provides a great platform for us to network and to learn more about what’s going on in the industry. We’ve sponsored a number of events in NSW and that has provided a platform for us to credentialise ourselves with a number of new target audiences.

Why did you become an AIIA member?

How does AIIA benefit your business?
Early on, we attended an AIIA event and met a company who has since become our biggest customer. That's been a tremendous benefit for us, and one we didn't plan on at the start.
Around four years ago, we also ended up halving our insurance premiums through AIIA's services. AIIA.biz gave us access to a broker who took our premiums from $50k to $25k – another great benefit for us, obviously, that we didn't quite appreciate at the start.
The journey's really begun and hopefully we will remain members for a long time to come.

The AIIA is an important part of the local Australian community and the local Australian IT Industry. The IT industry in Australia is probably at its most important peak in history and it has certainly been realised that the IT industry can deliver benefits in terms of productivity and enhanced deliverables to other industries more so than we’ve ever seen in history, and the AIIA leads that charge.
So we feel it’s important to be part of that community in driving the change and the adoption of IT in the Australian landscape. We get a lot of benefit from being a part of the AIIA and we have been a member for many, many years.
We get benefit from the fact that we feel responsible for driving the local agenda for IT and that’s important for our organisation. It’s also important for us to understand how the local IT community’s feeling, and we find the AIIA is a great network for us to be able to leverage in terms of understanding that.
We attend a lot of the events, both as contributors, where we are talking to the local IT community, and that’s important for us. It gives us a large part of the IT community for us to be able to talk to, to be able to steer them in the right directions and how to adopt and leverage IT, but its also an important network for us to understand exactly how other leading IT organisations are looking at the Australian markets to make sure that we are advising our clients in the right way. We feel it’s absolutely beneficial for IT organisations to be part of this leading Industry Association.
Warren Anderson
Ricoh has recently joined AIIA as a member and I had the privilege of attending my first NSW Government working group. At the working group we discussed a number of issues that NSW government finds important.
There were a number of suggestions made, there was a lot of discussion around the pertinent topics, there were recommendations made and all of them are being taken in going forward.
I feel that more companies should be part of this process, I think they would all benefit, especially in the IT area. In doing so, by collaborating with the NSW government and contributing, they would promote their companies and at the same time be able to influence policy.
I found the experience to be very fruitful. There are some meetings that are fruitful, but this one to me was like a whole orchard. I’m looking forward to attending more meetings and contributing as much as I can and I think it would be a good idea for any company interested in promoting themselves, contributing to the effort of the government, and making the experience for the NSW public a better experience to join in .

The strength of the AIIA is to be able to anticipate issues that are becoming critical to the industry. The AIIA can access ministers and work with the government to produce strategies that address the concerns; which can then be understood and be implemented in a meaningful way.
The AIIA has done very important work in which many parties have benefited. The AIIA spearhead the whole approach on developing a new policy on behalf of the industry with government and all key stakeholders so that we have a 'voice' to influence the outcome and to influence the environment in which we want to do business - a great win and success for the AIIA.
