Digital Local Government (DLG) Program

Posted By Online Services, AIIA, Wednesday, 26 October 2011

Digital Local Government (DLG) Program: DBCDE this week released the $17.1 million DLG program guides. AIIA positively influenced the shape of these guidelines via a forum organised involving both members and non-members and a follow-up report.

The guidelines call for the submission of project business cases for funding to deliver innovative online services by councils in the eight National Broadband Network first-release sites. The program encourages the development of online services that are replicable and scalable, and which other local governments across Australia can adapt for their purposes. It has the potential to encourage a step change in the quality, availability and speed of local government services.

The program guidelines provide information on the objective and purpose of the program, as well as information to assist eligible councils to develop project business cases for program funding. Guidelines and more information about the Digital Local Government are available on the Department’s website.

NSW Digital Economy Industry Action Plan consultations

Posted By AIIA, Monday, 24 October 2011

NSW residents and organisations are invited to have their say and contribute to the development of a Digital Economy Industry Action Plan for the State.

The NSW Government's 'Have your Say' website is now open until 18 November to receive online comments and submissions.

Public submissions and input is invited to help develop Industry Action Plans for a range of key economy sectors, including the Digital Economy. The Digital Economy plan  is focused on digital content and applications; information services and analytics; and, smart networks and intelligent technologies.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Stoner said the Government has established Industry Taskforces to develop the Industry Action Plans to position key sectors of the NSW economy for growth, innovation and productivity, exports and global competitiveness, and new investment over the next decade and beyond.

"The Have your Say website can be used by anyone including individuals, industry participants, local government, organisations and associations,” Mr Stoner said.

"The online forums will allow people who are unable to attend live forums or don't have the time to write formal submissions to participate via the internet at any time of the day or night that suits them.

"They will also suit organisations who wish to participate in the Industry Action Plan consultation process in an informal way.

"Feedback provided through the online forums will allow for a qualitative and quantitative analysis of comments and submissions made, trends and key issues identified, and characteristics including geographical locations."

Updates on the Industry Action Plan process will be provided through www.business.nsw.gov.au and social media using the Twitter hashtag #iapnsw and the Facebook page.

Formal submissions are also being sought addressing the Taskforce's Terms of Reference, which are available on the site. The closing date for these is 25 November 2011.

Submissions can be uploaded via the Have your Say website.

Public forums are also planned for industry participants in both metropolitan and regional areas in February and March next year.

Meetings will also be held with key industry thought leaders in peak industry associations, regional associations, individual companies and academia.

Greening your business through technology

Posted By Online Services, AIIA, Sunday, 23 October 2011

The benefits of increased technology use in lowering your business’ carbon footprint are often not fully understood. The team from the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) with the support of Carbon Down, have released the second instalment of their GreenIT eBook- ‘Greening your business through technology’.

This book supplements the first eBook, and presents a keener focus on addressing the needs of small to medium sized businesses. The GreenIT eBook Version 2 highlights why GreenIT is important from an industry capability perspective, gives an overview of a generic GreenIT roadmap an organisation may choose to follow, and then highlights - through 16 different case studies - how organisations have benefited by implementing a number of these GreenIT initiatives.

The eBook brings to light the indirect contribution of technology to sustainability, championing the transformational role of information communication technologies in a low-carbon economy, by looking at ways to assist other industries to meet the challenge of lowering their overall environmental footprint. Through activities such as optimising fleet management, more intelligent utility grids, electronic bills and payments, video-conferencing and improved building management systems, the eBook shows the significant opportunity to implement new technologies that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the business sector.

Similar to the introduction of any new business practice, the eBook encourages organisations to ‘start small’, focusing on quick wins- or the low-hanging sustainability fruit. Short term success will then allow a sustainability program to expand throughout a business, building up momentum and management buy-in. The formation of a Green Team throughout this process is essential, in order to provide leadership, as ongoing initiatives involve more and more stakeholders.

Further insights, hints and tips from the eBook include:

• Energy efficiency will account for 55% of Australia’s cuts in greenhouse gasses over the next 40 years.

• A recent calculation of the IT footprint within Australia indicated that the IT Industry alone accounts for nearly 2.7% of Australia’s total carbon emission

• Power is not managed very well within Australian data centres. Some 65% of IT departments rarely see the power bill nor do they have an idea of how much electricity they are consuming.

• A simple first step medium sized organisations can take is to start measuring their data centre’s Power Utilisation Effectiveness (PUE).

• More than 50% of executives consider sustainability ‘very’ or ‘extremely important’ in a wide range of areas (including new-product development, reputation building and overall corporate strategy).

Have your say: National survey of volunteering now open

Posted By Online Services, AIIA, Sunday, 23 October 2011
AIIA has more than 100 industry representatives who volunteer their time and expertise to drive the association. The Australian ICT sector actively supports a culture of giving back through CSR initiatives in our member companies. Let's make sure our voice is heard and contribution counted in the  National Survey of Volunteering Issues

This survey is a critical tool to help drive and shape Volunteering Australia’s policy and advocacy for the coming year. This year, Volunteering Australia is giving more emphasis to asking volunteers, organisations and companies for their ideas on:

* Priority issues
* What would make a difference
* What makes volunteering work well.

The survey is open until Sunday 6 November. The results will be released on International Volunteers Day on Monday 5 December.

There are three parts to the survey – you only need to do the one that applies to you and your involvement in volunteering. Follow these links to access the relevant survey:

For COMPANIES

For VOLUNTEERS

For NOT-FOR-PROFIT or GOVERNMENT ORGANISATIONS

The survey has been conducted annually for more than five years and the data has been used by many sources to influence decision makers about the key issues affecting volunteering.

See www.volunteeringaustralia.org for more information

AIIA is keen to map the current contributions that our members make through their CSR initiatives. Please contact Kelly Hutchinson to share your experience, showcase your programs or recognise your people in the AIIA bulletin and Member Profiles
