A fast-paced social media channel for governments, organisations or
institutions to engage with local residents or visitors in public spaces has
been recognised for its innovativeness at the Queensland iAwards
Company/Group category presentation.

The merit recipient of the coveted Research & Development iAward was Ronald
Schroeter, Urban Informatics Research Lab – QUT for its Discussions in Space
(DIS) which offers a method of engaging with residents or visitors in public
spaces, such as city squares, shopping malls, train or bus stations and
museums.

It facilitates a public discussion and opinion forum through the
installation of a large public screen, which passers-by can directly
interact with using their mobile phone's SMS and/or Internet capabilities.

The iAward was one of 13 presented to Queensland’s leading innovative
companies at a ceremony attended by The Hon Ros Bates, Minister for Science,
Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts.

The ceremony honoured the State companies/groups at the very cutting edge of
the latest in technology innovation and significantly was targeted at
Australia’s best by recognising the outstanding achievements of our
exceptional home-grown innovators who had made exemplary contributions to
the ICT industry over the past 12 months.

The ceremony also featured the The Pearcey QLD Entrepreneur Award for
outstanding individuals who have ‘taken a risk and made a difference’ which
was awarded to Neal Glentworth, Managing Director, Glentworth Pty Ltd.

Following the presentations, the winners of the State iAwards will go on to
compete against the winners of other State and Territory awards for the
National iAwards which will be announced at a gala event in Melbourne on
Thursday, 9 August 2012.

In addition, many of the 2012 National iAwards winners across all categories
then will represent Australia against the best innovators in the
Asia-Pacific ICT industry who come together at the APICTA Awards to be held
in Brunei.

Jointly presented by the Australian Computer Society (ACS), Australian
Information Industry Association (AIIA) and Pearcey Foundation the iAwards
celebrates the industry coming together to celebrate the best within its
ranks.
