AIIA today released its latest Survey of Salaries and Remuneration Packaging for the ICT Industry, demonstrating a modest fall in the total ICT remuneration cost over the past 12 months.
The current same incumbent movement figure of 5.5 per cent (at Total Remuneration Cost) has fallen from 5.8 per cent in August 2007 and 5.9 per cent in March 2007, a revealing trend in an environment in which ICT skills are at a premium.
‘It is clear that responsible management of budgets remains a key priority for the ICT industry,’ AIIA CEO Sheryle Moon said. ‘In an uncertain economic climate, technology companies are increasingly looking for creative ways to improve their employee value proposition in order to attract and retain the talent they need.’
‘For example, one in five organisations report that they are improving motor vehicle policies specifically as an attraction and retention strategy,’ said Ms Moon.
Current industry retention strategies are working well. The survey reports healthy levels of voluntary staff attrition – the number of permanent staff leaving an organisation – at around 15 per cent.
‘Low attrition rates reflect the fact that industry workplaces are healthy and busy: when people are productive and engaged, they are not actively seeking jobs,’ Ms Moon explained.
Total staff attrition – which includes issues associated with mergers and acquisitions across the industry – sits at nearly 19.7 per cent. This figure is higher than average and reflects the volatile nature of the industry in today’s environment.
The national economy is in turbulence with the fight against inflation, impending IR legislation change, and speculation about wages blowouts; meanwhile, the new Federal Government is spending its first few months in review, which will mean delays in funding proposals, new initiatives and grant monies across the board.
‘The current economic climate means that it is imperative for executives, line managers and HR professionals to understand the actual movements in ICT salaries over last six months in order to have informative discussions with employees and to budget responsibly into the future,’ said Ms Moon.
The AIIA Salary Survey is Australia’s most comprehensive survey of ICT industry salary rates and provides an accurate insight into the current marketplace. The survey encompasses the remuneration of over 38,000 sector employees.
It is available exclusively to AIIA member companies for the development of their recruitment and remuneration strategies.
