The inaugural National ICT Careers Week continues to gain momentum, and with three weeks to go until the launch on 28 July 2008, over 200 companies, educational institutions, government organisations and industry bodies have now registered their involvement.
Under the banner Start Here, Go Anywhere participating organisations will be promoting the wealth of career opportunities that surround ICT graduates in today’s economy through events and activities being held around the country from 20 July to 2 August 2008.
‘The level of support being shown for the first ICT Careers Week is a fantastic result by any measure,’ said AIIA CEO Ian Birks. ‘The industry is united in its belief that we have some of the best careers available to graduates in the current marketplace.’
‘The future of ICT is exciting because it will be carried by a generation who embrace technology and recognise the possibilities it can bring,’ said Glen Boreham, Managing Director of IBM Australia and New Zealand. ‘I look forward to seeing a new world of work where offices as we know them will cease to exist, a global community of problem-solvers not bound by geography but who inspire innovation and a generation with a strong desire to go one step further than they did yesterday. This is what the ICT industry is all about.’
Simon Burke, Managing Director of participating company IPscape, said that ‘few careers are truly international, with skills transferable to any country in the world. ICT is certainly one of those careers, and has allowed me to work with some of the world's largest companies in the UK, Eastern Europe and most of Asia. And there are huge opportunities into the future: the world is dependent on our industry, and I often say that few things are certain except for death, taxes and ICT.’
In Queensland, the University of Queensland School of IT and Electrical Engineering will be hosting a series of ICT and engineering-focused presentations by industry representatives and leading academics outlining career and study options as well as providing on-site demonstrations and tours of facilities. The day runs from 8am to 3pm on 3 August 2008.
ACS Western Australia will present ICT Grad Connect as part of the week to provide a practical way to connect organisations with undergraduate students before they enter the labour market. Grad Connect provides the time and opportunity to develop closer relationships, assisting students and organisations to make better employment decisions.
And in the Northern Territory, the Department of Corporate and Information Services will be conducting a Schools ICT Careers Roadshow, visiting schools across the territory with dynamic presentations for Year 9 and 10 students that feature information packs, give-aways, music and multimedia. The roadshow will also be filmed for distance education students on the NT IDL network.
National ICT Careers Week will be held in all states and territories from 28 July to 2 August 2008 as an initiative of the ICT Industry Leadership Group, co-hosted by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA).
