National ICT Careers Week opens across Australia

Friday July 25, 2008

The first ever National ICT Careers Week begins on Monday July 28, 2008 and will run through to Friday August 2, 2008 to promote the richness and variety of career options available in Information and Communication Technology.

Over 100 events and activities are being held around the country by companies, educational institutions, government organisations and industry bodies under the ‘Start Here, Go Anywhere’ banner.

‘National ICT Careers Week is aimed at broadening the horizons of young school leavers who may not have considered undertaking ICT studies or the possibilities that surround a career in the ICT industry,’ said Penny Coulter, Chair of the Careers Week Steering Committee.

The key messages being promoted to young people, parents, teachers and the community are:

  • ICT is a truly global career – your work in ICT can take you round the world
  • No matter what area you want to work in, studying ICT will help you achieve it
  • ICT means meeting people and working with people to solve problems
  • ICT – be a part of the solution for climate change
  • ICT is entertainment > movies, music, games, animation and fashion
  • ICT is a great job earning great money with a great lifestyle.

More than 100,000 new ICT jobs have been created in the past decade alone. While national employment levels have risen by 1.6% over the past five years, ICT professionals have seen a growth of 47.6% in the ten years to May 2008.

‘We appreciate the strong interest and participation by so many people across Australia in the first National ICT Careers Week,’ advised Australian Computer Society CEO Kim Denham.

‘We have received strong endorsement from our colleagues to run the National ICT Careers Week again in 2009’ added Australian Information Industry Association CEO Ian Birks.

Full details of participating organisations, and their proposed activities, are listed on the National ICT Careers Week web site.
