Smart Systems - media welcome
1-5pm Thursday 31 July
Year 10-12 students are invited to a program of hand-on activities that will explore a range of exciting applications of computer science and engineering to build "smart" systems.

  • 1-2pm: Virtual Reality Laboratory Tour.   See, touch, and manipulate computer generated worlds in the VR lab.  Feel the "weight" of objects as you knock down virtual walls with a haptic input device while viewing the scene in 3D.
  • 2-3:30pm: Robotics Challenge.  Learn fundamental robot navigation methods and use intuitive graphical programming tools to teach an autonomous robot to navigate an obstacle course.
  • 3:30-5pm: Thinking Head Workshop.  Meet Stalarc, an animated "thinking head" that is about to make his appearance at the Beijing Olympics.  Write a program that responds to questions in natural English so you can have a real conversation with him.

Bookings for this event are essential.  To reserve your place, contact Paul Calder, (08) 8201 2827

It's a must for all students who want to understand how to improve their prospects of getting that all important first job.
I am a recent graduate of the BIS Masters Program. Since completing the program in 2007, I have become an analyst with APA Group, the leading energy transmission business in Australia, with interests in over 12,000 kms of natural gas pipeline and distribution infrastructure. At only 24, I've gained two degrees and a Masters from the University of South Australia, being awarded the undergraduate degree and Masters degree in business information systems in only 4 short years. Having been active in the workforce now for over 6 months, you come to realise how important a good foundation is. With the combined year of industry placement and the theory instilled in the BIS program, I've found myself ahead of the pack in a number of areas. Networks of industry partners, valuable hands-on experience and expanded ways of thinking are all part of giving me the edge I need to take myself further."" Scott McKenzie, 2007 Graduate.
