AIIA is working with its special interest group, Females in Information Technology and Telecommunications (FITT), to:

• promote the ICT industry as a flexible and dynamic work environment
• change the outmoded perceptions of technology careers
• cultivate the career paths of talented individuals.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that women comprise less than 20 per cent of ICT employees, and make up only 25 per cent of university students who choose to study ICT – with the trends indicating that this figure is falling.

Governments and industry need to work together to help young people, and particularly young women, understand the opportunities technology skills can bring.

Some of AIIA's initiatives have included:

• 2007 International Women's Day speech by AIIA's Chief Executive Officer, Sheryle Moon to FITT luncheon
• Set Up for Success, the training initiative being led by AIIA, funded by the Australian Government and supported by the Australian Computer Society to provide female ICT professionals and their employers with the knowledge and skills to address barriers that limit women’s ability to progress in the ICT industry
• Women who shaped the ICT industry
