Government ICT Reform Agenda delivering new ICT environment

The Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) welcomed the continued strengthening of industry relationships with Government in the wake of ICT reform activities being undertaken through the implementation of the Gershon Review, as highlighted by Minister Tanner’s Press Release of 13 August,  Government’s ICT Reform Agenda on Track.

“Sir Peter Gershon’s recommendations for the use and management of ICT in Government have resulted in a reinvigorated dialogue between the ICT industry and the Australian Government,” said AIIA CEO Ian Birks.

As part of the implementation process, AIIA has been working closely with the Government and a number of federal departments to explore new models of engagement.

“Beyond consultation on cost reduction activities, AIIA is leading the ICT industry in the development of new engagement models that will redefine the way that the Australian Government utlilises the know-how of the information technology industry and applies it to its core business activities,” said Mr Birks.

“This will be one of the most significant outcomes to arise from the Gershon review and – correctly implemented – will serve both the industry and the Government well.”

Mr Birks said that the industry was pleased with the level of consultation being afforded by AGIMO.

The recent early engagement workshop held with the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) delivered strong outcomes, auguring well for the future development of the relationship with the ICT industry.

Other areas of focus for AIIA include the optimisation of procurement panels, review of IP ownership policies, Green ICT initiatives and workforce and skills issues.

“The sound reinvestment of savings derived from the current activities will be essential,” added Mr Birks. “We look forward to continuing to work closely with Government as key projects are identified over the coming months.”
