Alan Noble, Engineering Director - Google Australia
Professional biography:
Alan Noble is an IT entrepreneur and executive with 25 years of international technology leadership and management experience, in Australia, the United States and Japan.
Since Feb 2007 he has lead Google's research and development operations in Australia, one of Google's fastest growing engineering centres and the home of Google Maps. He joined Google from NetPriva, a networking software company he founded in 2005 which was acquired by Expand Networks.
From 1986 until 2002 he lived in California, where he worked for Schlumberger, the world's largest oilfield services company, for 8 years. In 1996 he founded NetMind, which developed the Internet's first change detection service.
NetMind was acquired in 2000 by Intellisync (now part of Nokia) where he remained as VP of Engineering until returning to Australia in 2002. He has been granted seven US patents and has several others pending.
Reasons for nominating and qualities brought to the board:
There has been plenty of talk recently about reinvigorating and modernising older bastions of the Australian economy such as the car industry, the energy industry and others. Yet no other industry has more potential to spur on Australia's future economic growth than information technology.
I believe that it is possible to establish Australia as a global IT leader, but this can only happen if we act now to make IT a top national priority. Two areas of strategic importance are government procurement and IT education.
If elected, I will work to ensure that government IT procurement practices support robust IT innovation and competition in Australia. Second, I will work on reversing declining enrolments in IT degrees and fostering the next generation of innovators.
I believe my decades both as an IT entrepreneur in Australia and the US combined with my experience working for large multinationals, make me uniquely qualified to add value to the AIIA.
