AIIA supports development of My Health Record
Monday, 30 Jul 2018
Canberra, Australia – The Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) congratulates the Australian Government on its development of My Health Record, an initiative that will touch the lives of all Australians. Digitalisation is a key policy priority for the AIIA and its members, and is a critical enabler for government to deliver better services for citizens.
AIIA extends our support to both the Australian Digital Health Agency and its industry partners for their part in delivery of My Health Record. AIIA members look forward to working with the Australian Digital Health Agency and federal departments during the ongoing implementation of the National Digital Health Strategy and the Australian Government’s realisation of its digital transformation agenda.
The level of discussion generated by the My Health Record is an indicator that such transformation is more than a simple implementation of technology. It requires looking at old problems and processes from a new perspective, and engaging with citizens in a fundamentally different way as we take advantage of the benefits of digitisation.
Australians expect the government to deliver online and digital services1 and, while digital services are a key enabler of our economic growth and social prosperity, the AIIA recognises there are challenges to be met in areas of trust and security. The normal rate of technology adoption indicates it will take some time to establish trust in any new online delivery of government services. This is particularly acute in the health information sector where consciousness around privacy and security of personal details is heightened.
The AIIA and its members are supportive of initiatives that encourage and increase adoption of secure, smart and integrated technology solutions. Across all sectors, security is more dependent on behaviour of those who have legitimate access to information, as the systems and processes that provide authentication, access controls, firewalls and similar.
AIIA’s members anticipate collaborating and partnering with the federal government to help lift Australia into the top three countries in the world for Digital government by 2025. The My Health Record is a step in that direction. Lessons learnt by departments, agencies and industry in delivering the My Health Record will help inform the design and implementation of this and other digital transformation projects across government.
