We bring a new edge solution to fire prevention and safety at a new innovative level through the use of advanced sensors. Our thinking is about protecting people and their homes. The advanced sensors use of AI technology will allow the 21st century individual to have peace of mind. The advanced sensors, learns and gathers data, accurately monitors, detects and prevents fires caused by appliances. This is a real problem; preventing fires from being informed on its performance and danger alerts. Fires destroy homes and it is a problem that would not only save lives but be a solution for insurance companies. This is an Australian innovation which is making a difference and has the potential to create positive change for the community and lives.

aWear: Aged Care Watch
Senior Students - TAS
The aged care sector is constantly growing. As more people move into aged care homes, devices need to be designed to help and assist these residents in their daily lives. Our project is designed to assist and help elderly who forget to take medication and are risk at falling. At the moment, there are no devices which have been specifically designed to assist nurses instead aged care homes have to purchase 500$ smartwatches. We plan to bring this price drastically down and cover all the needs of aged care homes. This project consists of two parts, a physical watch which the elderly will wear, and an online service to monitor and get alerts from every watch. The system will be able to alert nurses when a resident needs help, show medication reminders, detect if a resident has left to home unattended and detect falls.

Automated Hip Fracture Detection
Undergraduate Tertiary Students - SA
William Gale developed an automated machine learning system (based on Deep Learning) to detect hip fractures from frontal pelvis x-rays, which is an important and common radiological task. The system was modelled with 53,000 clinical x-rays (representing a decade of scans from the Royal Adelaide Hospital) and can be applied to clinical data, automatically excluding inappropriate and technically unsatisfactory studies. The Automated Hip Fracture Detection system demonstrates diagnostic performance that matches or even exceeds the performance of human radiologists – making it the first large-scale method to reach such performance on a clinical radiological task. Further to this, a new method of interpreting the predictions of deep learning-based classifiers has been well received by doctors. Translated to clinical practice, such a system has the potential to increase the efficiency of diagnosis, reduce the need for expensive additional testing, expand access to “expert-level” medical image interpretation, and improve overall patient outcomes.

Movement Impeding Device: A Biomedical Apparatus
Senior Students - VIC
The innovation titled as the Movement Impeding Device (MID) is a biomedical research apparatus invented and designed by students to improve methodological processes involving Zebrafish embryos in research labs. In contact with scientists at a lab using Zebrafish, a common issue when imaging or handling Zebrafish was their tendency to 'wiggle' and move in petri dishes, creating issues for the researcher. What we strove to do was alleviate this issue with a cost-effective solution that would be long-lasting and effective in its use. The device we created aims to aid researchers in their handling of Zebrafish embryos and larvae when being monitored under strict conditions; such as visual imaging. The innovation achieves this through an intuitive design which creates soft indents in the agarose gel (which the petri dish is filled with) for the embryos to sit in. This is the primary function which the device aims to achieve consistently. Watch YouTube video here ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GumlWWXRrWc

Non-Invasive Glucose Responsive Insulin
Undergraduate Tertiary Students - NSW
For individuals diagnosed with diabetes, Continuity takes the advantage of the newest technology used to monitor and treat diabetics 'non-invasively'. The ear device is in the form of an earring using radio-frequency spectroscopy to continuously monitor glucose levels non-invasively. The user is alerted through ear vibrations and mobile notifications when glucose levels shift. Furthermore, the insulin delivery device is a non-invasive handheld oral device, accompanied by child lock features, that can effectively deliver insulin safely and at real-time to prevent life-threatening complications and possible death from arising. Both devices communicate data to a mobile application for continuous monitoring by the individual and healthcare professionals for maximized quality of life.

It has a unique purpose to aid students navigating their school though the world they see, which is a user-friendly method compared to top-down GPS positioning on their mobile phones. Adaptability is a leading factor as the use is not just limited to the educational market, but to the commercial market as well, for example; wildlife parks for navigation and information, or libraries for finding books, which can further expand market opportunities.

Many word games currently available on the app stores are very similar, requiring specific solutions to each level before the player can progress further. This alienates those players that like to test their vocabulary as well as those that are stuck on a level and don’t wish to use hints to help them solve it. ‘PatchWord’ presents players with random boards that have no predefined solution. Players are required to solve boards to be the same colour by making words using letters of the same colour, such that the letters used swap to the other colour on the game board. Letters can be changed as often as needed but words can only be used once per game, so players need to plan carefully as they progress through the game. The game also has no hint system so players will succeed purely on their ability.

Ethics Casual Teacher System
Senior Students - NSW
The Ethics Casual Teacher System was created for Primary Ethics (primaryethics.com.au) who provide ethics classes for children in primary schools across NSW. The system coordinates matching casual ethics teachers to temporary vacancies in school ethics programs. Currently, the vacancies are filled through a haphazard process where not all the information gets to the teachers who require it. This process requires a large amount of the teachers' time to ensure that all of the relevant details are communicated, and a large amount of the ethics coordinators' time to find a teacher to fill the vacancy. As such many classes do not have a teacher. The new Ethics Casual Teacher Sydney streamlines the process of matching the teacher to the school and delivering all the relevant information to those who need it.

Although there have been other systems with this vision, we believe we have come to the closest flexible, tightly decoupled and multi-channel promotion engine in the market. It is flexible due to the easy integration with other platforms such as mobile phones, online and physical stores, social networks, etc. It is highly customisable because of the use of business rules to create promotions, and the friendly user interface it provides. It can also be used in multi-channel environments targeting all or some of the channels. It decouples the promotions from the point of sale or from the software that is used to register the sale, making the testing of promotions independent from the point of sale.
